The Client: Lya Lin, Creative Designer

Lya Lin After Effects project

Lya is a creative designer working in the food and drinks industry.

The Objectives

  • To gain knowledge of Adobe After Effects, the industry leader in motion graphics
  • To understand how to animate typography and illustrations to music
  • To build an awareness of different animated effects
  • To correctly set up and render an animation project

Key Skills

I discussed the motion graphics course with Lya at extensive length to ensure she learned the skills which would apply the most closely to her creative challenges faced at work. The main areas we decided to focus on were:

After Effects training: keyframes, effects, animating typography, shape layers, video compositing, motion tracking, character animation, rendering

Lya says:

‘I have always been interested in creating animations. After Effects is the most important tool for this, but the interface and modules are complicated which is challenging for a self-learner. To accomplish a great animation takes time and a good mentor, and I am very lucky to have been trained by Ric. He has amazing practical experience in graphic design and 2D/3D animation. He builds a clear structure for each lesson, and the exercises in each session are very helpful for developing your skills. As a student, I have access to his constructive advice which helps refine my animations and improve my abilities further. I really enjoyed his teaching and learned a lot of useful techniques from him during our time together! A great mentor can make learning fun and inspire students to reach their full potential, and I think Ric is perfectly suited to this role.’
